Introduction The increasing volume of air traffic requires next generation surveillance technologies and procedures operating both in airspace and at airports in support of SESAR 4D-trajectory/ASAS and A-SMGCS operational concepts. This implies the need for accurate and high update rate sensor technologies such as wide area (WAM) and airport multilateration (MLAT) and ADS-B position broadcast. Innovative solutions for guidance and control functionalities on airport surface, new system architectures, algorithms for multisensor data fusion and tracking have to co-operate efficiently with legacy infrastructures such as ASR and SMR. Since the successful ESAVS 2007 symposium in Bonn/Germany and the subsequent successful ESAV’08 in Capri/Italy, these technologies have gained momentum and are being deployed in large scale all over the world. ESAVS 2010 in Berlin/Germany will carry forward this momentum and focus on international implementation and operational use of MLAT/WAM/ADS-B as well as on research and development, deployment and certification. ESAVS 2010 is dedicated to provide up-to-date information to experts and decision makers in the world of sensor development, tracking, sensor data fusion, avionics and airport operations as well as air traffic control procedures and technology.
